RDF production at Delete Oy - a case study

When environmental services specialist Delete needed a new alternative fuel production system for its site in Tampere, central Finland, the €100million turnover company turned to Austrian-based UNTHA. Now manufacturing more than 20 tonnes of 80mm RDF an hour, for gasification, the technology has more than fulfilled Delete’s expectations…
Employing 700 environmental services professionals, Delete is a well-known waste management brand in Finland. The company’s facilities receive commercial and industrial waste (C&I waste) from businesses throughout the country, before carefully processing the materials for use within the Waste to Energy sector.
Typically handling 70% pre-treated demolition waste and 30% pre-sorted energy waste including a large amount of wood, Delete strives to transform these materials into a valuable fossil fuel substitute that can be used within gasification plants to create energy. So when it came to selecting new technology for its Tampere operation, Delete needed a robust RDF production system which could consistently and cost effectively achieve a homogenous particle size of 80mm.
Familiar with the waste shredding technology of Austrian-headquartered UNTHA – and aware of the company’s reputation in this complex field – Delete began to investigate whether the team could help. As conversations unfolded Delete soon realised UNTHA could take care of not just the shredder, but the entire RDF system.
Intrigued by UNTHA’s proposals, Delete travelled to the team’s Kuchl headquarters, to try out the all-new XR Cutter waste shredder under real operational conditions. This demonstration day proved the XR could fulfill Delete’s requirements which, coupled with UNTHA’s reputation for RDF and SRF production, confirmed this solution was the right decision for the Tampere facility.
Thereafter a team of UNTHA engineers installed the entire RDF system, including a walking floor, XR3000C waste shredder with two 113kW water cooled synchronous motors, three knife rows, 110mm screen, discharge conveyor, overband magnet, master control, control cabinet room and further conveyor. The system was assembled and commissioned ahead of an acceptance test in June 2014, which proved the solution could achieve a guaranteed capacity of 20 tonnes per hour, in mixed conditions. During a recent visit, throughputs of 23 tonnes per hour were being seen, with 95% of output materials less than 80mm in size.
But a high capacity was not the only criteria for this RDF system. Delete also sought energy efficient machinery that would support the company’s commitment to the environment whilst driving down costs. With its innovative eco drive concept and lower power usage, the XR consumes up to 50% less fuel than competing shredders, without compromising on the tonnages achieved. The extraction of clean ferrous and non-ferrous materials for resale, plus the commodity value of the alternative fuel produced, the avoidance of landfill charges, minimal maintenance regime and the durability of component parts, all further add to the solution’s cost effectiveness.
Commenting on the system, Delete’s production manager Jaakko Kouhia said: “UNTHA has worked collaboratively with our team in Tampere to deliver an RDF production system that we are now very pleased with. It is flexible and configurable, enabling us to quickly adapt our operations to suit customers’ evolving particle size or capacity requirements, and the energy efficiencies we have witnessed, make the XR a very financially and environmentally sound investment.
