FCC Austria has trusted UNTHA for 20 years

Since 1988, FCC Austria has been processing and disposing of waste from commercial and industrial businesses, municipalities, and private households. For nearly 20 years, the company has trusted shredders from UNTHA. Its choice: the UNTHA ZR2400 two-shaft shredder—known for its durability and ability to save up to €90,000 per year in electricity costs.

The problem
Initial situation

Each year, FCC Austria processes around 65,000 tons of waste, most of which is prepared for thermal recovery at an incineration plant. The decision to purchase a new shredder was driven by the need to replace an existing single-shaft unit from a competitor. Due to its limited throughput and high sensitivity to contaminants, it was no longer meeting daily operational demands. The requirements for the new shredder were obvious: the machines run continuously and must handle challenging materials with a high level of impurities. The company was looking for an energy-efficient two-shaft shredder, preferably with an electromechanical drive, a throughput capacity of 50 tons per hour, high resistance to contaminants, and minimal maintenance needs.

The solution
Why opt for an UNTHA shredder?

The UNTHA ZR2400H shredder was selected. Key considerations included cutting force, throughput capacity, resistance to contaminants, the ability to quickly resume operation after encountering contaminants, and ease of maintenance. The deciding factor was the shredder’s energy efficiency, made possible by its water-cooled synchronous motor (UNTHA Eco Power Drive). Compared to competing machines, it saves up to 100 kWh per operating hour. The shredder runs two shifts per day, totaling around 3,600 hours per year. At an average electricity rate of $0.25 per kWh, this results in potential annual energy savings of up to €90,000. The machine’s front and rear access doors allow for easy removal of contaminants, and its maintenance-friendly design was another key benefit. An additional advantage is the low loading height, which makes it easy to feed the shredder using a wheel loader.

Our shredders operate continuously and handle challenging materials with a high level of impurities. That’s why we have very high expectations for a shredder. The ZR2400H from UNTHA meets our requirements perfectly and represents state-of-the-art technology.
